The cantilever design allows the pump to empty a sump without the motor being submerged or the pump having to have a mechanical seal.  Vortex design semi-open impellers are also available on some sizes of pump.  Each pump is specially designed to suit each application with the manufacture of a pump length to suit the liquid depth.
